Techniques to Prevent Students from Cheating in Online Exams

Online testing has been accepted as a new way to conduct different types of tests and exams in schools, institutes, and even businesses. This approach is being adopted because of the convenience factor, automatic grading, instant feedback system, and improved learning opportunity.

However, most educators are still struggling to prevent cheating during exams that are based on online exam software.  This, in fact, is a very important concern as the students are just a click away from finding answers on the internet. Moreover, they are often seated shoulder-to-shoulder. This makes it easier for them to peek into others’ screens.

If you too are facing this challenge, here are a few tips that can help you conduct cheating-free online exams create though online test makers.

Tips to Prevent Cheating

·         Always make a quiz that is not too long. But make sure to take such tests frequently so that students are able to catch up with the pace of lessons being taught in the classroom. This reduces the chances of them cheating in exams because the marks or points on each test are relatively lower than what a comprehensive test would have.

·         Use the ‘randomization’ option your test creator has to shuffle the questions and answer choices or choose the questions randomly from your pool of questions to create different exam papers in a single test. Most quiz software packages have this tool, and this deters students from looking here and there for help as everyone around will have different tests.

·         Prevent students from bringing smartphones or any other gadgets to the classroom or examination hall. Do strict checking and impose penalties/punishments that will keep them from attempting such an act.

·         Develop a code of conduct for exams and implement it school-wide. Present the code to the students in exams or reiterate in the last session you get with them before exams begin. Several studies endorse this as a very effective method to put a stop to cheating in exams.

·         Make the students lock down their browsers or do it yourself before an exam begins on every computer. This will disallow students from using the browser to search answers on the internet, access any notes, or use communication platforms to ask answers from one another or anyone else.

·         Don’t forget to add a password to the test. This option is also present in most online testing software packages and is used to keep students from accessing the exam prior to its start time. They can do this to discuss answers with each other or find them on the internet to use in exams.

·         Consider applying an IP address restriction if several students are attempting an exam together from a single platform. This will people from accessing the IP address and the exam itself.

The concept of honesty is very important in the early stages of a child’s development and learning. While the above-given techniques will ensure cheating-free exams, it is better if the instructor discusses the idea openly in the class. This will deliver a message that cheating is unethical and unacceptable and will naturally create an environment where students don’t attempt to cheat.
