Evaluation is the process of acquiring and assessing information to give useful feedback about a particular subject. It involves collecting and examining data, judging the information derived from it, and giving a verdict whether the assessment result is worthy of merit or not. To assess how much your students are learning, it is important to learn the different types of Evaluation. Types of evaluation
1. Process Evaluation.
Process evaluation is used to determine whether the intended program or activities have been implemented. For instance, it can be used by the teacher and the student to assess the progress or the effectiveness of the entire syllabus. This evaluation method helps students to actively participate in the evaluation process, making the entire lesson a collaborative process. Such collaboration reduces the difficult responsibility that comes with teaching and evaluating at the same time.
2. Product-Oriented Evaluation.
This type of Evaluation is where data is gathered from a teacher-made test. An instructor must have exceptional testing skills to use this form of Evaluation. There are two types of examinations used for product-oriented Evaluation: an essay test and an objective test. In addition to these tests are other assessments such as true-false questions, short answer completion, and multichoice questions.
3. Formative Evaluation.
Formative Evaluation is widely used to observe the learning progress of scholars during a particular period of instruction. It focuses on giving continuous feedback to both the student and teacher as regards to success and failures while still in the instruction stage. Because the pupil’s progress is monitored from time to time, a teacher can create unique training methods and techniques to help provide better learning experiences. The primary function of a Formative Evaluation is to diagnose the most appropriate technique or materials for conducive learning. It helps in finding out the position of a student in the syllabus from which he/she should start learning. 4. Summative Evaluation.
Summative Evaluation is simply the assessment of learners’ achievement at the end of a curriculum. The main objective of this Evaluation is to grade pupils. It shows the extent to which a student has mastered the content of the syllabus. The summative evaluation method tries to match one learner against another, which in some cases causes adverse effects. An example of an adverse effect is when this Evaluation brands a pupil as a failed student. This can cause frustration and be a stumbling block in a candidate’s learning process. Examinations are tools for this form of Evaluation. Test for Summative Evaluation is generally given at the end of a curriculum or a semester. Example of summarized evaluations is a standardized test, practical and oral test, traditional university and school examination, teacher-made test, rating scales, etc. The functions of this type of Evaluation include; crediting learners by collecting examined data after achieving instructional goals in the related syllabus. In essence, it helps to certify that a student can perform a particular job according to previously set standards. This evaluation method helps in promoting leaners to the next class or semester. Lastly, it helps in selecting a student for higher courses after completing a particular course.
